Match Goals and New Maps!


Today's update of the GM's toolkit contains 3 new arena maps along with 9 new creep groups built for those maps. My map design skills are getting stronger and these 3 are all very cool. The island map in particular was a big hit with the playtest crew.

It also contains a new system called Match Goals which change how recovery works in Tailfeathers and builds out some connections between the kazzam half of the game and the investigative half. It does this all while giving players fun optional goals to aim for during their kazzam matches. It was inspired by Gloomhaven's battle goals, which I always loved. And it neatly resolves a design conundrum: I wanted a character's conditions (e.g. "exhausted") to have some impact on how they play kazzam, but just giving them a penalty makes kazzam less fun! Instead of an unfun penalty, they get a battle goal which puts them in control over decisions of how to play and how much to prioritize their own condition vs their team's chances in the match. If they just want to focus on winning, they can ignore their battle goal and do whatever it takes, putting their own body on the line for the sport.
